Nominator's project description

Professor David Hanna has made numerous outstanding contributions to laser physics and nonlinear optics. His work led to new compact lasers of high output power using optical fibers or miniature bulk materials as the active medium. He pioneered frequency conversion of laser radiation in novel highly efficient nonlinear materials, in particular in periodically poled crystals. Such light sources and their application in new fields such as nano-optics are the topics of Prof. Hanna's research at Humboldt University and the Max-Born-Institute, Berlin.
